iPhone Not Charging? 5 Fixes to Try Before You Book a Repair

Woke up this morning to a dead iPhone even though it was plugged in overnight? There could be several reasons why your phone isn’t getting the charge it needs.

If your iPhone is not charging properly, try these five checks first:

1. Check and clean your charging port
2. Test a different cable, adapter and wall socket
3. Force restart your iPhone and update the iOS
4. Try wireless charging
5. Check your iPhone battery and charging settings

Fix 1: Check and Clean Your Charging Port

Dust and lint buildup in your iPhone charging port can cause problems when connecting the cable to the port. It is easy to miss, but clearing the port could get your iPhone charging again.

How to safely check and clean your charging port:

1. Switch off your iPhone and inspect the port under a bright light.
2. Gently wipe around the opening with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Avoid using sharp objects, metal tools or cotton buds.
3. If debris is stuck deep inside, stop, and have it professionally inspected.

Fix 2: Test a Different Cable, Adapter and Wall Socket

If your iPhone is not charging when plugged in, the phone port may not be the problem at all. You can test your charging setup by trying a different compatible cable, power adapter, wall socket, or charger.

Fix 3: Force Restart Your iPhone and Update the iOS

Your iPhone relies on software to manage charging, so a temporary glitch can interfere with the process.

For most newer iPhones:

1. Pressing and releasing the Volume Up button.

1. Pressing and releasing the Volume Down button.
2. Holding the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

After restarting, reconnect your charger. Then check Settings > General > Software Update for any iOS updates. This helps rule out software problems before you consider a hardware repair.

Fix 4: Try Wireless Charging

If your iPhone supports wireless charging, check if that option works. If wireless charging works while your cables do not, the fault is more likely to be with your cable, adapter, or charging port.

Fix 5: Check Your Battery and Charging Settings

Sometimes your iPhone is charging normally but stopping at a limit you have set.

Go to Settings > Battery > Charging and check whether a Charge Limit is enabled. Depending on your model, your iPhone may stop below 100% to help protect battery health.

Temperature matters too. If your phone becomes unusually warm after gaming, navigation, or being left somewhere hot, charging may slow or pause temporarily.

Disconnect it, move it somewhere cooler, and let it return to a normal temperature before trying again.
